Research: bridging the gaps in perioperative patient care

We’ve always been curious about how we can make the patient journey better. That’s why we partnered with Bond University to take a deep dive into patient experiences during elective surgeries. The result? A scoping review that unpacks the good, the ugly, and everything in between when it comes to perioperative care.

Firstly, let’s cut through the jargon. What’s perioperative care? It’s the full spectrum of care patients receive before, during, and after their surgery. Our review analysed patient reports to identify what really matters to them and how healthcare professionals can make a difference.

The Top Four Things Patients Value

  1. Realistic Expectations: Patients thrive when they know what’s coming. Clear communication about the process, recovery, and the role of caregivers can make all the difference.
  2. Accurate Information: Patients crave timely, detailed, and understandable info to navigate their journey confidently.
  3. Consistent Communication: Trust is built when communication flows smoothly and predictably—before, during, and after surgery.
  4. Individualised Care: No cookie-cutter approaches, please. Tailored care helps patients feel seen, heard, and respected.

How Clinicians Can Step Up
The research highlighted four areas where healthcare professionals can have a big impact:

  • Pain management that’s proactive and clear.
  • Supporting psychological recovery, including handling anxiety and life adjustments.
  • Coordinating care so patients don’t feel lost in the system.
  • Guiding patients towards regaining their mobility and function.

Why It Matters
By aligning patient expectations with practical care strategies, clinicians can significantly improve outcomes. It’s not just about treating a condition; it’s about empowering patients throughout their journey.

What’s Next?
This study is a great starting point, but there’s more work to do. We’re committed to exploring how these insights can shape the tools and resources we offer, ensuring patient experiences improve every step of the way.
